About

Becoming a copywriter wasn’t something I planned. I mean, hell, I thought I was going to become an architect.

Cliche as it sounds, I’ve loved writing since I was young. I even vividly remember being in elementary school and joking with one of my best friends (who went on to become a journalist, by the way!) about us becoming “secretaries” one day. Our young minds really thought that writing emails and typing on the computer all day was the epitome of what being a writer was. (Hey– we were ten!)

But were we wrong?

A Copywriter Is Born

Ironically, after graduating from college (with a degree in Landscape Architecture), I worked as an administrative assistant. Ten-year-old me would have been proud. More specifically, though, I was a pharmacist scheduler—a role in which I, you guessed it, ensured that Pharmacists were scheduled for shifts so they could help patients.

This role required that I create attention-grabbing emails that were sent out en masse to get Pharmacists’ attention and elicit an immediate response. If I needed someone to cover a shift, I needed to reach the maximum number of people in the shortest amount of time.

I liken that job to a non-emergency 911 operator. If we got a call, we would have to drop everything to find shift coverage at a moment’s notice. It was pretty high-stress. But, it helped me learn relationship-building, an invaluable skill I use every single day. To do that job effectively, I needed to build trust with my team of pharmacists. They needed to know that when they needed help, they could reach out to me. And when I needed help, they were willing to answer the call… or email. 😉

I did my best to keep people entertained and feeling appreciated. Turns out, I was really good at it. My audience felt heard and valued because I knew who I was speaking to. My subject lines caught people’s attention, often making them laugh, and my email open/response rates were higher than those of my coworkers. I constantly had people responding to me, laughing at a joke, or just reaching out to say to think of them in the future.

After that role, I wanted to continue stretching my creative muscles, but I thought I would try my hand at actually using my degree (I spent good money on that thing, after all). So, I took a job as a store layout designer and used everything I’d ever learned in school about AutoCad– woohoo. 🥱

From Corporate Baddie to Freelance Copywriter

The thing is, I started that role at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the uncertainty about job security at the time, I decided to start a side hustle as a blog writer as a safety net. I figured I’d always loved writing, and when I found out about websites like Fiverr and Upwork, I thought, “Okay, let’s try it!”

I moonlighted as a copywriter for a couple of years and absolutely fell in love with it.

At the same time, I also started to feel like I wasn’t reaching my full potential in my corporate job. Helping a Fortune 500 company grow its business, especially when it felt like it didn’t care about its people, didn’t feel right for me anymore. (My anti-corporate agenda is a story for another time; I digress).

I wanted to help people like me—the small and medium-sized businesses, the mom-and-pop shops of the world—grow those businesses and brands. More specifically, I wanted to help women entrepreneurs grow their businesses. I firmly believe that money in the hands of good-hearted women will change the world. (Thank you, Amanda Frances).

In July 2023, after seven years with the company, I decided to quit my corporate job to focus on helping women entrepreneurs grow their brands through authentic SEO copy and content writing. And the rest, as they say, is history.
